Onions in the Bed

We built a garden this spring of eight raised beds, and I filled six of them with asparagus, strawberries, garlic, onions, and salsify. I'm deciding what to plant in the last two. Carrots, certainly, and perhaps leeks. We'll see.

I planted several different types of onions, and one of them is a pre-1790 heirloom variety called potato onions. The bulbs will grow in a cluster and it is supposed to be a very hardy variety. Already the leaves are much more robust than any of the other sweet varieties I planted.

An onion can make people cry but there's never been a vegetable that can make people laugh.
